What is Gold Purity?

The purity of gold is measured in terms of Karats. As seen in the chart below 24KT gold represents 100% pure gold or gold in its purest form that is too soft for the setting of diamonds. The ideal purity for jewelry crafting is 18KT, used by most fine jewelry companies around the world. At Carat Crush we do not compromise on quality therefore we only use 18KT gold for all our pieces.

What are the 4 Cs?

Gemological Institute of America (GIA) created the universally accepted method for assessing diamonds also know as the 4 C’s of Diamond Quality, These include; Color, Clarity, Cut & Carat Weight.

Colour

The color of a diamond is based on the absence of color rather than the presence of color. The GIA color scale ranges from D – Z measuring the colorlessness of the diamond. As seen below D color represents the highest degree of a colorless diamond and continues to letter Z with an increasing presence of color.

Clarity

The clarity of a diamond is based on the absence of inclusions. The GIA clarity scale ranges from Flawless to I3 measuring the clarity of the diamond. As seen below flawless diamonds represent that the diamond has no inclusions or blemishes and continues on the scale based on the increase of inclusions in the diamond. It must be noted that many inclusions are so small that they cannot be seen by the naked eye unless examined by a trained diamond grader under 10x magnification.

Cut

The cut of a diamond is based on how well a diamond is cut so that when its facets interact with light the diamond has maximum sparkle. The beauty of a polished diamond’s lies in how light strikes its surface, how much light enters the diamond and how this light returns to your eye creating that brightness and sparkle.

Carat Weight

Carat Weight refers to the weight of a diamond. In metric terms, 1 carat weighs 200mg. Diamonds under 1 carat are divided into 100 points. This system helps us determine the size of diamonds. Assuming all other variables (color, cut and clarity) remain constant, the larger the diamond the more rare it is, commanding a higher price. The chart below shows the increasing sizes of diamonds ranging from 0.05 CARATS (5 POINTER) TO A 3 CARAT DIAMOND.

The value of a diamond is determined taking into consideration all the 4 C’s of diamond quality. At Carat Crush we only use the best quality diamonds therefore we use diamond colors ranging from E – H and clarity ranging from VVS – VS.
